Obituary for Margaret Faye Lake (Wells)

Margaret Faye Lake (Wells)
A Celebration of Life for Margaret F. Lake will be 3:00 pm, Sunday, October 2, 2016 in the Norman “Shorty” Unruh Chapel at Golden Oaks Retirement Village. Dr. Greg Hook will officiate. A service will also be 11:00 am, Thursday, October 6, 2016 at the First Baptist Church, Laverne, Oklahoma with Rev. Donnie Scott and Rev. Gaylen Cox officiating. Burial will follow in Laverne Memorial Cemetery. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.

Margaret was born on the family Centennial Farm in Beaver County, Oklahoma, June 18, 1931 to Jesse Wells and Leona (Laverty) Wells, and passed away September 28, 2016 in Enid.

She met her future husband on a hot day in Laverne while he was painting the family insurance building. Margaret was on her way to work at Carlisle Drug Store, when Walt said “hey pretty lady, any chance you could bring me a glass of ice water”? so she did. They were married on May 6, 1951 in the First Baptist Church of Laverne, and have three children, Alinda “Lyn”, Judith, and Sheila. She and Walter both worked for the United States Post Office, she as a postal clerk. They were very involved in the community: founders of Laverne Golf & Country Club; founders of the Laverne Historical Museum; and long-time members of the First Baptist Church. She was past president of the Delphian Club (library). After losing Walter in 2007, she kept busy volunteering in the surgical waiting room at St. Mary’s Regional Hospital, receiving an award for her service, and also volunteered for the RSVP Welcome Center. She and Walter enjoyed traveling, visiting Ireland, Mexico, Peru, the fall tour of New England and many other states.

Margaret was known for her amazing fried chicken, grape leaves, Christmas cookies, devotion to her husband, family, friends, and never knew a stranger. She was adored for her quiet, unassuming and loving nature. She enjoyed genealogy and kept meticulous photo albums, not only for herself but for her immediate family. Margaret loved to garden, especially unusual varieties of flowers and plants. She loved cross stitching quilts and even won Grand Champion at the fair. Even though each quilt took 100 hours to complete, she lovingly made one for each of her immediate family. She was loved by everyone whose paths she crossed and will be greatly missed.

Margaret is preceded in death by her parents, husband Walter, grandson, J.B. Kelley, and brother Norvel Wells.

She is survived by her brother, Earl Wells (Frieda); three daughters, Alinda Gallegos of Alva, OK; Judith O’Neal and husband David, of Hillsborough, CA; Sheila Slinkard and husband Andrew, of Mesa, WA; five grandchildren, Stephen Pierson (Cindy); Pamela Ellingsen (Roland); Shelly DeAtley (Brien); Kimberly Lind (Randy); Windy Kelley; Lydia Kelley; many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to Laverne Museum, The Delphian Club, or the Laverne Cemetery Fund with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds.
